DESCRIPTION:

Examples of good practices are a collection of successful initiatives in North Macedonia that promote children’s participation in decision-making processes at the local level. It serves as a practical guide for municipalities, schools and organizations that want to strengthen children’s rights through formal and informal consultation and inclusion mechanisms. At the local level, some municipalities have established children’s councils and mechanisms that enable their active participation in decision-making that affects them. These initiatives create a space for direct communication between children and local authorities, thus enabling a better understanding of their needs and interests. In schools, child inclusion practices are most often implemented through student parliaments, feedback mechanisms and organized meetings between students, teachers and school management. These activities provide students with the opportunity to contribute to improving learning conditions, the quality of teaching and the school climate. Effective initiatives are the result of cooperation between local authorities, schools, civil society organizations and international partners. This cross-sectoral collaboration is key to creating a supportive environment in which children are not only heard, but their opinions are also taken into account in decision-making. Good practices need to be sustainable and adaptable, which means that they need to be institutionalized in municipalities and schools. This would lead to a continuous expansion of opportunities for children’s participation and the creation of more inclusive and child-centered policies.
